du completes testing of IoT ready network technology

UAE telco du reports that it has successfully tested the first ‘true' Internet of Things network (IoT) in the Middle East.

The operator has tested LoRa WAN network technology, a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated Things in regional, national or global networks. The technology is intended to enable the connection of a large number of sensors and other smart devices to networks while meeting key requirements of the Internet of Things such low power consumption, secure bi-directional communication, mobility and localization services.

LoRa has been developed by the LoRa Alliance, an open, non-profit association to develop standards for IoT, M2M and smart city-ready networks. Du has now joined the Alliance alongside other members including Actility, Cisco, Eolane, IBM, Kerlink, IMST, MultiTech, Sagemcom, Semtech, Microchip Technology and by service providers like Bouygues Telecom, KPN, SingTel, Proximus, Swisscom and FastNet.

The new technology will be an important part of enabling smart city solutions, by through relaying data from sensors countrywide, enabling smarter management of a vast array of city resources such as smart street lighting, waste management and parking.

Carlos Domingo, senior executive officer, New Businesses & Innovation, du, said: "This is a defining moment in the UAE's Smart City transformation. We need a new breed of ‘sensor friendly' network to establish the Smart City ecosystem - thanks to du, this capability now exists in the UAE.

"Dubai is our home and we want to lead its transition to become a better, smarter city for all to enjoy. Today we've shown how our network capabilities and digital know-how can deliver the Smart City ecosystem Dubai needs. We will not stop in Dubai, our deployment will continue country-wide throughout the UAE," he added.

LoRa adds to du's growing portfolio of advanced network technology, developed through an ongoing commitment to invest in innovation. Earlier this year, du became one of the few operators in the world to deploy LTE Advan
